TechAviv SV Community - December 2017 Meetup

  • Perkins Coie LLP 3150 Porter Drive Palo Alto, CA USA (map)

In this meetup, we will host Brian Blum, who investigated the biggest crash of an Israeli startup, and Ariel Cohen, CEO and co-founder of TripActions.

TOTALED: Startup Nation's Billion-Dollar Crash
The electric car company Better Place was featured prominently in the opening chapter to the best-selling book Start-up Nation. Better Place raised nearly a billion dollars before going bankrupt just five years later – leading Fast Company to call it “the most spectacular tech failure of the 21 st century.” Business and technology journalist Brian Blum wrote the book "TOTALED: The Billion-Dollar Crash of the Startup that Took on Big Auto, Big Oil and the World" as a “sequel” to Start-up Nation. Blum finally solves the mystery of who (or what) killed Better Place, and he is coming from Jerusalem to TechAviv to share what he learned. The Better Place story is filled with valuable lessons for entrepreneurs, investors and executives in businesses of all sizes -- - as well as everyone chasing the electric car Holy Grail. It's a story about electric cars and battery technology, to be sure, but it is also a gripping narrative, filled with colorful characters, incredible hype, questionable decisions and flat-out bad luck, played out on an international canvas.

HOT STARTUP: TripActions is Revolutionizing Business Travel
Ariel Cohen is a frequent business traveler that has been hamstrung by the outdated travel management systems his companies used. In 2015 he founded TripActions with the goal to build a better way for companies to manage business travel. In just two years, TripActions raised over $27 million dollars and disrupted the industry. Ariel will share TripActions' story, dilemmas, inner workings, and challenges.
